How many countries are there in South America?

March 29, 2020 by Karen Hill

The continent of South America is divided into thirteen distinct political entities.

One, French Guiana, is an overseas department, or province, of France.

The other twelve are independent nations. Of these, nine are Hispanic: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

Three are non-Hispanic: Guyana, Suriname, and Brazil.
