Yes, there were two survivors of the 1902 volcanic eruption of Mount Pelee on the island of Martinque.

The other 29,000 inhabitants were wiped out.

Similar catastrophic volcanic eruptions that have occurred in history include the famous incident at Pompei which wiped out the entire city.
