What Spot On Earth Is Farthest From the Ocean and How Far Away Is It From the Sea?

July 15, 2020 by Karen Hill

A spot in northwestern China, near the borders of Russia and Mongolia, is more than 1,600 miles (2,575 km) from any ocean.

Its latitude is 46° 17′ north, and its longitude is 86°40′ east.

Located approximately 200 miles north of the city of Ürümqi, in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region of China.

The spot is in the Dzoosotoyn Elisen Desert, and the nearest settlement is Suluk at 46°15′N 86°50′E about 7 miles to the east.

This location, however, disregards the Gulf of Ob as part of the oceans.

The location on land that is farthest from the ocean is called the continental pole of inaccessibility.
