A compadre is literally a coparent.
When a Latino child is born, the parents choose good friends to be compadres, often the godmother and godfather (madrina or padrino) at the child’s baptism.
The compadre is expected to be a second parent throughout the child’s life, keeping in contact and helping out as needed.
The system is called compadrazgo.
