It is technically a berry, and originated in the state of Puebla, Mexico.

The oldest evidence of avocado use by man was found in a cave located in Coxcatlán, Puebla, Mexico that dates back to around 10,000 years B.C.

Avocados have been shown to reduce harmful blood cholesterol levels, and have been used cosmetically by women as a facial mask.
