Where In the United States Are People Most Likely To Be Killed By Lightning?

May 3, 2020 by Karen Hill

In Florida, where almost 10 people each year, on average, are killed by lightning strikes from thunderstorms.

Most of the victims are men, and most are on golf courses.

Nearly five people on average are killed each year by lightning in North Carolina and Texas, two other states where golfers and thunderstorms frequently mix.

There are about 16 million lightning storms in the world every year.

Lightning can also be caused by forest fires which generate sufficient dust to create a static charge, and in ash clouds from volcanic eruptions.
