Although native to the Americas, Armadillos can be found in the central southernmost states, particularly Texas. Right now, there are hundreds of thousands of these animals in the State of Florida.
Most of these ant eating diggers are relatives of some that escaped when a circus truck turned over, spilling its cargo. Others are related to a few more that got loose when a tropical hurricane blew over the fence of a private zoo.
Most of the people who live in Florida do not like these strange-looking creatures, because they say they tear up lawns and gardens when they make the underground burrows in which they live.
Also, the armadillos that live near farms dig in the fields and make holes that cause cattle painful accidents. Armadillos are not native to the United States, but some cross over the border from Mexico.
Those that cross that border live only in Texas.
