In Germany they call the flower Vergissmeinnicht; in France it’s ne m’oubliez pas; in Sweden, forgata mig ej; in Italy, non ti scordar di me; in Spain, nomeolvides, all meaning “forget me not,” and in these, as in other countries, the flower is used as a token of friendship or, by lovers, in token of undying love.
How old may be these sentiments attached to the flower is anyone’s guess, but the widespread symbolism leads to the inference of considerable antiquity.
