How Did Argentina Get Its Name and What Does the Word Argentina Mean In Latin?

April 27, 2020 by Karen Hill

Argentina’s name comes from the Latin word for “silver,” argentum.

Silver is the precious metal that attracted Spanish settlers there in the 1500s.

They didn’t find silver, but they found fertile soils that brought the citizens riches from the production of grains and cattle centuries later.

Argentina is the second largest country in South America, and the earliest evidence of humans in Argentina is in Patagonia, which dates from 11,000 B.C.

The southernmost town in the world is in Argentina: Ushuaia, in Tierra del Fuego.
