How Many Satellites Orbit Saturn and How Many Moons Does the Planet Saturn Have?

February 14, 2020 by Karen Hill

Saturn not only has its many rings, it is also endowed with more known moons than any other planet.

Some eighteen moons have been named and astronomers suspect, are even sure, that several more exist.

The closest named moon to the planet is Pan, a body some 12 miles (19.2 km) in diameter.

Pan moves around Saturn about once every 12 hours at a distance of 80,000 miles (128,000 km).

The farthest moon is Phoebe, at almost 8 million miles (13 million km), and may be a trapped asteroid. It measures 18 x 120 x 125 miles (30 x 200 x 210 km) and makes one revolution in over 1.5 years (550 days).

Saturn’s largest, and perhaps most interesting, moon is Titan.
