How Much of the Middle East Is Desert and What Does the Name Rub’ al Khali Mean In Arabic?

February 20, 2020 by Karen Hill

About two-thirds of the land in the Middle East is desert.

A desert is an area that receives less than 10 inches (25 cm) of precipitation a year.

The world’s largest sand desert is the Sahara, in northern Africa.

The largest continuous area of sand in the world, about the size of Texas, is a desert called the Rub`al-Khali, meaning “Empty Quarter,” in Saudi Arabia.

Temperature ranges in these deserts can go from 120°F (49°C) in the daytime to 40°F (4°C) at night.
