What Is the Tallest Mountain In the World and What Is the Second Tallest Mountain In the World?

Mount Everest, on the border of Nepal and Tibet in the Himalayan mountains, is tallest mountain in the world at 29,035 feet (8,850 m) above sea level.

It was named after Sir George Everest, a British mountain climber.

The local name for Mount Everest is Chomolungma, meaning “Goddess Mother of the World.”

If measured from the seafloor, not from sea level, the tallest mountain in the world is Mauna Kea in Hawaii.

Mauna Kea is 32,000 feet (9,754 m) high, measured from its base on the ocean floor to its peak.

The five tallest mountains in the world are:

  1. Mount Everest in Nepal at 29,035 feet (8850 meters)
  2. K2 in Pakistan at 28,251 feet (8611 meters)
  3. Kangchenjunga in India at 28,169 feet (8586 meters)
  4. Lhotse in Nepal at 27,939 feet (8516 meters)
  5. Makalu in Nepal at 27,765 feet (8463 meters)

Mauna Loa at 4,169 m (13,678 ft) is the largest mountain on Earth in terms of base area with a volume of about 10,000 cu mi/42,000 km3.
