What is the United States’ largest minority group and are Hispanic Americans the country’s largest minority group?

June 19, 2020 by Karen Hill

Hispanic Americans are not the country’s largest minority group, African Americans are.

But the Census Bureau projects that by the year 2005, Hispanic Americans will surpass African Americans as the country’s largest minority group. By the year 2050, Hispanic Americans are expected to account for one-fourth of the U.S. population.

Between 1980 and 1990, the Hispanic American community grew by 53 percent, almost five times faster than the rest of the U.S. population.
