When did the Chinese invent Jump Ropes and what were they made of?

July 24, 2020 by Karen Hill

The Chinese jump rope isn’t really Chinese at all.

It’s probably Greek. The truth of the matter is that the origin of this game is recent but relatively unclear.

The game reached its height of popularity during the 1970s on playgrounds all over the globe. The materials that were generally used were either rubber bands, connected to one another in a long circle, or a long piece of elastic sewn together.

Regular jump ropes were first documented in China about 1,500 years ago. However, most agree that some form of jump rope had likely existed long before then.

Probably about as long ago as the invention of the rope met up with energetic children; some time in the Stone Age.
