The card game canasta is a variation on rummy and originated in Uruguay and Argentina in the 1940s.
With a name that means “basket” in Spanish, canasta quickly spread throughout Latin America. It became a big fad in the United States between 1949 and 1951.
Its variants include other games with Latino-flavored names, such as Bolivia, Uruguay, and Samba.
