Where Is the Biggest Church In the World Located and When Was the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace Built?

February 18, 2020 by Karen Hill

Built in 1989, the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace of Yamoussoukro can hold 18,000 people.

The church is located in Yamoussoukro, the capital of Cote d’Ivoire, a country on Africa’s west coast.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace was built in just three years.

Its dome rises higher than the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

The Roman Catholic minor basilica is not a cathedral contrary to popular belief.

The design of the dome is inspired by that of the Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican City, and is ornamented with a larger cross on top.

The basilica is constructed with marble imported from Italy and is accented with contemporary stained glass from France.
