The Innu (also known as the Montagnais-Naskapi) and Beothuk lived in what is now eastern Canada, while present-day central Canada was the home of the Cree and Chipewyan.
Farther west were the Beaver and Slavey of present-day western Canada and the Gwich’in and Ingalik of what is now Alaska.
People in the Subarctic made snowshoes of all shapes and sizes to help them walk through the deep snows. According to Chipewyan legend, snowshoes were invented by the first man and woman on earth.
