Immediately after John Dillinger’s death, rumors quickly spread about a mysterious “Lady in Red” who had betrayed Dillinger by pulling out a handkerchief as she left the theater.
Ironically, the lady dressed in red wasn’t Anna Sage, Dillinger’s real betrayer, but his unsuspecting date, Polly Hamilton, who was wearing a dark orange dress.
Another irony: Turning Dillinger in didn’t do Sage any good; she was deported anyway.
It’s true that no good deed goes unpunished.
