Does a Plane Flying Against the Rotation of the Earth Fly Faster Than a Plane Flying the Other Direction?

April 9, 2020 by Karen Hill

The earth spins under a plane as it travels, at 15 degrees per hour.

But that doesn’t mean much when everything else on the planet including the atmosphere spins with the earth.

The air mass that supports the plane as it travels is rotating along with the earth, under its gravitational pull and at the same speed.

So therefore the earth’s rotation does not have any effect on when the plane arrives.
