How many Dominican Americans are there in the United States?

The 1990 census counted 506,000 Dominican Americans in the United States, but the real number today is probably close to a million.

In other words, there are about as many Dominican Americans as there are Cuban Americans.

It is hard to know the exact number because many Dominican immigrants have come to the country illegally. Those who do so live in danger of deportation if caught.

The economic situation in their own country, the Dominican Republic, is so bad that they keep coming.
