How Many People Move From One Place To Another In the United States Each Year?

May 3, 2020 by Karen Hill

In 1998, about 16 percent of the U.S. population, forty three million people, changed addresses.

Most moved within their own county, but 15 percent packed up and moved to another state.

The average American changes residence 11 to 13 times over a lifetime.

Various studies have found that moving house is often particularly stressful for children and is sometimes associated with long term problems.

On the Holmes and Rahe stress scale for adults, a “change of residence” is considered a stressful activity, assigned 20 points out of 100.
