Some Spanish Jews who were forced to convert to Christianity actually did continue to practice Judaism in private.
In other cases, families lost all memory of their Jewish roots. Only in modern times has there been a movement in Latin America among people who think they may come from Jewish stock and want to reclaim their heritage.
The movement is known in Spanish as la sangre llama, or “the blood is calling.”
