Mars is home to the tallest and largest known volcano in the solar system: Mons Olympus.
This extinct shield volcano has a base of about 420 miles (700 km) and reaches 15 miles (25 km) into the atmosphere.
Its caldera (large opening) measures 53 miles (85 km) in diameter.
By comparison, Mt. Everest, the tallest mountain on Earth, is only 5.5 miles (9 km) high.
The largest volcano on Earth is Mauna Kea, which extends 6 miles (10 km) up from the ocean floor.
Mons Olympus is three times as tall as Earth’s Mt. Everest.
Earth’s crust would be unable to support the weight of Mons Olympus.
