What was an indentured servant during the American Colonial Period?

An indentured servant was any person, white or black, who worked as a servant under a contract-like arrangement for a set period of time, usually seven years.

When that time was up, they were given a small amount of money, clothing, or plots of land to assist their transition to freedom.
