When Was the Sears Tower In Chicago the Tallest Building In the World?

June 3, 2020 by Karen Hill

Between 1973 and 1996, the Sears Tower was the tallest building in the world, but today it is just the tallest building in North America.

The Sears Tower is 1,450 feet (442 m) high and has 110 stories. However, it does have the highest occupied floor (1,431 ft (436 m)) of any building in the world.

The tallest buildings in the world as of 2001 are the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; each building rises 1,483 feet (452 m) high and has 88 stories.

Chicago was home to the world’s first metal frame skyscraper, back in 1885 when the 10-story Home Insurance Building was completed.
