Where Are the Florida Keys Located and How Far Is Key West From Miami?

June 26, 2020 by Karen Hill

Key is another way of spelling cay, they’re pronounced the same way, from the Spanish word cayo, which means a small island made up largely of coral or sand.

The Florida Keys stretch from Biscayne Bay southwestward off the southern tip of the state for about 150 miles (242 km).

Key Largo is the largest, and Key West is the most distant from Miami.

To get to Key West from Miami, you must travel nearly 160 miles (258 km), mostly on U.S Route 1, the Overseas Highway.

This road takes you across 42 bridges as it hops from island to island.

The Florida Keys are connected via U.S. Route 1, which runs on numerous long bridges over the shallow waters separating the islands.
