Where does the phrase “greasy luck” come from and What does it mean?

To a Nantucketer, the phrase “greasy luck” is just a way of saying “good luck!”

It is a hang-over from the days of whaling, and meant that the well-wisher hoped that the whaleman would quickly fill his ship with oil.
