Where does the term “Javelle water” come from and What does Javelle water mean?

Correctly, we should always spell “Javelle water” Javel water, and even more properly call it eau de Javel, as the encyclopedias generally record it and as it appears in French.

The chlorinated bleaching agent known by the name was first produced by the Javel works near Paris in 1792.
