Costeños are people from northern coastal Colombia who are of mixed African, Spanish, and Native American descent.
At home, they live in cities such as Cartagena. In the United States, many live in New York and Chicago.
Both in the United States and Colombia, Costeños tend to keep apart from pure white Colombians, who have historically received social and economic privileges.
Whites, blacks, and mulattoes are all minorities in Colombia, where 58 percent of the population is mestizo.
