Who were the First off the Boat when setting foot in the United States?

Who first settled the land that is now the United States?

The Pilgrims of New England and John Smith of Jamestown get all the publicity. But the Spanish were the first Europeans to set foot in almost half of the nation’s states, or 24 out of 50.

The states included the following:

Alaska (not counting the Russians, whose country straddles Europe and Asia and who approached from Asia)
