Why do South Americans emigrate to the United States instead of other South American countries?

July 21, 2020 by Karen Hill

Many South Americans seeking a better life go to other countries on the continent.

Colombians, for example, often move to neighboring Venezuela, Ecuador, or Panama.

Peruvians may emigrate to Chile, Paraguay, or Argentina. Some feel they will have an easier time in a foreign country that shares their language and some common elements of Latino culture.

On the other hand, during periods when all of Latin America is suffering similar economic woes, the best choice is to go outside the region to some place that isn’t, like the United States.
