Why is the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, Michaelangelo, spelled differently from the artist Michelangelo?

May 30, 2020 by Karen Hill

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle cartoon’s artists, Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, say the difference in spelling for the character Michaelangelo was a mistake.

When they created the comic book series, computer spellcheckers weren’t widely available.

The turtle ended up with an extra “a” in his name purely by accident.

It should be noted that both Laird and Eastman had been students of art history.
