Why was U.S. president Grover Cleveland nicknamed “Big Steve”?

U.S. president Grover Cleveland was nicknamed “Big Steve”.

He was a big man, weighing about 280 pounds, and his first name was Stephen. Grover was his middle name.

He was also called “Uncle Jumbo,” presumably not by his friends.
