U.S. President Grover Cleveland was twenty-eight years older than his wife Frances.
She was 21, and he was 49. Cleveland was the first and only president to marry in the White House.
The public went crazy over the couple. They saw her as the young gal who put the reigns on an old codger, their bachelor president; they were most beloved.
However, the story has a twist: The couple had had a different type of relationship prior to their romance. She was his ward. When her father, Cleveland’s former law partner, Oscar Folsom, died in a carriage accident when Frances was 11, he left Cleveland his estate.
Grover Cleveland spent the rest of Frances’s childhood financially and emotionally supporting her and her mother.
