The 1864 edition of Webster’s Dictionary of the English Language (G. & C. Merriam) offers the following etymology for the word “wigwam”, and most other authorities are in general agreement:
From Algonquin or Massachusetts wek, “his house,” or “dwelling place”; with possessive and locative affixes, wekou-om-ut, “in his (or their) house”; contracted by the English to weekwam, and wigwam.
