Although now a dialectal word, causey is the basis for the word causeway, and no pun is intended.
That is, a causey is a raised footway or embankment over marshy ground made firm by stamping or pounding.
Probably it is derived from Latin calx, “heel.”
Such an original footway might later be widened for the accommodation of carriages.
If so, it then was known as a causey-way, or, eventually, causeway.
