Are There Lions In America?

March 23, 2020 by Karen Hill

Yes, there are, although there used to be quite a few more than there are now. Bobcats and mountain lions both have become rare. They have been hunted and almost wiped out because they were known to attack cattle and sheep.

This is too bad, because although the large cats have been known to attack domestic animals, they feed mainly on animals that are much more of a pest to man than they are. Their food is largely rabbits and rodents that destroy crops.

The bobcat is much smaller than the mountain lion, but both are secretive animals. They hide during the day and do most of their hunting at night.

Bobcats are found most often in dry desert areas, and mountain lions prefer cooler forest lands.

There are instances of mountain lions attacking men, but there has never
been a documented case of a bobcat doing so.
