How many Cubans were in the United States before the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s?

May 28, 2020 by Karen Hill

The United States was a haven for Cuban exiles even during Spanish colonial times.

About five thousand Cubans, including many who fought for Cuban independence in the Ten Years’ War, found refuge in the United States in the late 1800s.

Once Cuba achieved independence in 1902, Cubans continued to come to the United States, fleeing political instability at home.
