How Were People Created By Gucumatz In Mayan Mythology and What Gifts Did the Four Men Receive?

February 9, 2020 by Karen Hill

Gucumatz and the Heart of Heaven called on Fox, Coyote, Parrot, and Crow to bring them yellow and white corn seeds.

They ground the corn into a paste and fashioned the first four men.

At first, Gucumatz and the Heart of Heaven were thrilled with their new creations.

The four men were intelligent and quickly gave proper thanks and praise to their creators.

But soon, Gucumatz and the Heart of Heaven realized that the men were too smart, and that they had the ability to see into heaven itself.

Deciding that the four men were too much like gods, Gucumatz and the Heart of Heaven blurred their vision, so they could only see what was around them.

Gucumatz and the Heart of Heaven also gave the four men gifts of happiness, four beautiful wives as companions.

These four couples reproduced and filled the world with people.
