What was “Menuditis” and Where did the group Menudo originate?

This was the affliction of millions of teenage female fans of the Puerto Rican musical group Menudo.

In the early 1980s, this band of five young male rock singers became all the rage among Hispanics in the United States and throughout the Western Hemisphere.

Latina girls in love with the cute singers wore “I Love Menudo” buttons and bought Menudo T-shirts, boots, hats, and key chains. At concerts, Latinas screamed, moaned, and fainted.

Menuditis was the Hispanic equivalent of Beatlemania in the 1960s. Some Anglos began to enjoy their music as well, but it was Latinos, especially Puerto Ricans, who really created the Menudo phenomenon.
