What was the Gold Rush about and When did the California Gold Rush take place?

On January 24, 1848, gold was discovered at Sutter’s Fort, a ranch and trading center near Culloma, a Nisenan Indian village.

Although the ranch’s owner tried to keep the discovery secret, word of the gold spread quickly, first in the West and then throughout the East.

Hoping to find their own fortune, thousands and thousands of Americans rushed to California to mine for the precious metal during the next three years.
