It reached that mark in the mid-1900s, around the same time Indonesia gained independence.
It’s still one of the 17 largest cities in the world, with a population of over nine million.
Established in the fourth century, Jakarta became an important trading port for the Kingdom of Sunda, and is located on the northwest coast of Java.
