How did the Crocodile get its Name and what does it mean in Greek?

The Crocodile’s name comes from the ancient Greek krokodilos, meaning “worm of the pebbles.”

Why they thought this was a good name instead of something like “monster lizard of the water” is quite unclear.

Maybe the crocodile looked like a worm when it was first discovered, and the name stuck.
