What Does the Name of the Betelgeuse Star Mean In Arabic and How Did It Originate?

February 20, 2020 by Karen Hill

The Betelgeuse star is the bright red star in the Orion constellation.

The name Betelgeuse is Arabic, and it generally means “the armpit of the mighty one.”

If you look at the constellation, you can see it firmly planted where the hunter’s pit would be.

Betelgeuse is approximately 640 light-years from the Earth and is the ninth brightest star in the night sky.

One of the largest and most luminous stars known, Betelgeuse is a red supergiant star and is nearly as large as our solar system.

Because of its size, Betelgeuse is aging very rapidly and will very likely go supernova within the next millennium.
