For six years around the turn of the century, Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid led the most successful gang in the Old West.
Then they took off for New York City, where Sundance married his sweetheart, Etta Place. All three of them then sailed for Bolivia in South America. They had spent a large amount of money in New York and wasted little time in getting back to their business of robbing. Not long afterward, Etta became ill and returned to the United States.
Now the mystery begins. What happpened to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid? Some historians say that the two were killed by a hail of bullets fired by the Bolivian army, which surrounded them in 1909 at Vicente, Bolivia.
While Sundance was never heard from again, Butch’s sister says that he visited her in the 1920s at her home in Utah, and others claim to have seen him living at one of his old hideouts, Robber’s Roost. Butch was so well liked by everybody that no one would think of turning him in.
Do you know where the name Butch came from? For a short while he worked as a butcher in a small town in Wyoming. Butch Cassidy’s real name was Robert LeRoy Parker.
