If you will cross-check the entry cousin-german it will be seen that german means “having the same parentage; closely related.”

And germane may be substituted, and frequently is.

Nowadays, however, there’s a growing tendency to apply the latter term to matters that may bear close relationship, that may be relevant or pertinent, rather than to persons having close relationship.
