Where does the word “larboard” come from and What does larboard mean?

The first element of the word larboard, lar, is often assumed to have been a corruption of lade, thus making larboard the side of a vessel for loading, the side opposite the “steering side” or starboard.

The assumption is logical, but the sad fact is that it cannot be traced, as a lawyer would say, “not proven.”
