Which Other Culture Besides the Ancient Egyptians Worshiped Cats as Gods?

May 13, 2020 by Karen Hill

The way most of us pamper cats, you could say that many modern Americans worship the feline.

You’ll also find cat-based religions in past or present Thailand, China, India, and among the Incas in South America.

It may be hard to believe, but the Bible doesn’t mention cats of any sort, not even once.

However, a part of the Talmud written in about A.D. 500 waxes eloquent about cats’ admirable qualities, encouraging believers to own cats “to help keep their houses clean.”

Felix the Cat get his name as a little joke based on Fells catus, the Latin name for the common house cat.
