Why did Mexican American immigration stop with the bracero program?

Mexican American immigration did not stop with the bracero program. Heavy immigration from Mexico continued under the Immigration Act of 1965.

By favoring applications from immigrants who already had family members living in the United States, the law encouraged Mexican Americans to bring family members from Mexico.
