Whatever the present application, the original term hallmark has designated the official stamp or mark of the Goldsmith’s Company of London or other assay office applied to gold and silver articles to indicate their purity.
Such stamping was introduced by order of Edward I in the year 1300, and there have been but few changes in the designs so employed since that date.
